A little history before we start... There had been sheet music charts before these. In 1936 there was (briefly) a BBC show called "The Music Shop" which featured the top ten tunes of the fortnight. The first number one hit was It's A Sin To Tell A Lie. Unfortunately the music industry kicked up quite a fuss about the show, accusing the BBC of inaccuracy and bias, and it did not last long. Melody Maker's first sheet music chart ran during January and February 1942, with Yours; Rose O'Day and That Lovely Weekend taking top honours. They had another go from May to September of 1943, during which time Whispering Grass was the longest-running number one with 11 weeks. Melody Maker finally made a go of a regular sheet music chart in 1946, though for the first ten months it was merely a list in alphabetical order, rather than a ranking. The songs are listed here by the date they entered the list. The names are of course those of the songwriters, and the numbers in brackets are the song's weeks on chart. 1946 - Alphabetical listing only. 27.07.46 Bless You For Being An Angel - Eddie Lane, Don Baker (26) Cruising Down The River - Eily Beadell, Nell Tollerton (10) Chickery Chick - Sidney Lippman / Sylvia Dee (4) Homesick, That's All - Gordon Jenkins (7) I Can't Begin To Tell You - Mack Gordon / Jimmy Monaco (12) In The Land Of Beginning Again - Grant Clarke / George W Meyer (12) Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall - Allan Roberts / Doris Fisher (10) It's A Pity To Say Goodnight - Billy Reid (3) Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside) - Ben Raleigh / Bernie Wayne (19) Let Bygones Be Bygones - Joseph George Gilbert (12) Mary Lou - Dick Hurran (9) Money is The Root Of All Evil - Joan Whitney / Alex Kramer (10) Oh, What It Seemed To Be - Bennie Benjamin / George Weiss / Frankie Carle (7) Primrose Hill - Charlie Chester, Ken Morris, Everett Lynton (24) You Can Be Sure Of Me - Joseph George Gilbert / Lewis Ilda (7) 17.08.46 Day By Day - Axel Stordahl, Sammy Cahn, Paul Weston (1) Down In The Valley - Frank Luther (26) 24.08.46 There's A Harvest Moon Tonight - Jack Denby, Muriel Watson, Sonny Miller (15) 14.09.46 Do You Love Me? - Harry Ruby (10) One-zy, Two-zy (I Love You-zy) - Dave Franklin, Irving Taylor (6) You Always Hurt The One You Love - Allan Roberts, Doris Fisher (2) 28.09.46 And Then It's Heaven - Eddie Seiler, Sol Marcus, Al Kaufman (5) Johnny Fedora - Allie Wrubel,.
